The environmental statement represents two of three construction projects needed to complete a 9.6 mile gap on the east side of Birmingham that will complete the construction of I-20 between I-59 in Birmingham and the Georgia State Line. In particular, it will allow traffic to be taken off U.S. 78 and completely bypass the built-up suburban area of Irondale and East Birmingham. The State of Alabama Highway Department knows of no adverse environmental effect which will be created by the construction of this project.
