Oxidation of Sulphides in Aggregates Produced from Witwatersrand Quartzite Gold-Mine Waste Dumps and Its Contribution to the Sulphate Attack of Concrete
Waste dumps remaining after the exploitation of strata of the Witwatersrand Supergroup for gold have for many years served as a useful source of concrete aggregate, road aggregate, railway ballast and fill. There have been reports of damage by sulfate salts to bituminous pavements constructed with crusher-run bases of Witwatersrand quartzite, but very few reports of damage to concrete and mortar caused by deleterious constituents of the coarse and fine aggregate from this source. The mechanism of the attack on concrete by sulphide-bearing aggregate from gold-mine waste dumps will be discussed, and some precautionary measures to prevent such attacks suggested.
