Full-Scale Experimental Verification of an Analytical Model for Evaluating Methods of Supressing Excessive Bridge Vibrations
The report describes the design, installation and testing of a passive, damped and tuned vibration absorber for reducing the dynamic responses of a specific simple span bridge during and following the passage of a vehicle. In addition, the experimentally measured effectiveness of the vibration absorbers was compared with the predicted results from a computerized theoretical model in which the bridge is considered as an equivalent simply supported beam with damping. The vibration absorber system which was installed on the underside of the 97 foot span steel girder two-lane bridge weighed 32,000 pounds. The field testing involved the measurement of bridge dynamic responses before and after installation of the absorber. Bridge excitation was induced by the passages of a 3-axle vehicle in various lanes, at various speeds and with various loads.
