Cowpens National Battlefield Site, South Carolina: Robert Scruggs House, Historical Data
Although the Robert Scruggs House was not built until 1828, its proximity to the Revolutionary War battle site at Cowpens, South Carolina, accounts primarily for its importance, preservation, and study. This report traces five generations of the Scruggs family, three of whom lived in the house. Based on local court records, deeds, census information, wills, and family recollections, the report surveys the family's geneology, land ownership, and, in brief, life style. A final section outlines what little is known historically of the house's structural history. The report is accompanied by appendices containing copies of important documents, a bibliography, and drawings. In addition to its association with Revolutionary War events, the house now represents a quickly vanishing style of less pretentious vernacular architecture that also accounts for present restoration plans.
