Spillway and Sluices, Allegheny Dam, Allegheny River, Pennsylvania and New York. Hydraulic Model Investigation
Investigation of the spillway and sluices on a 1:36-scale model involved verification of hydraulic performance of the spillway, refinement of the stilling basin design, and selection of high-level and low-level sluice designs. Tests indicated that the maximum expected discharge (140,000 cfs) was satisfactorily passed by the spillway and the six low-level sluices at a head on the spillway crest of 29 ft. A high-level sluice, discharging through the spillway spray walls, with its major axis parallel to the spillway slope, effectively spread flow across the spillway weir. A horizontal low-level sluice with flared exit and tetrahedral deflector provided good flow distribution in the basin. The stilling basin effected satisfactory energy dissipation with the apron raised 3 ft and the baffle pier height decreased 3 ft. (Author)
