A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A major preservation effort commenced in 1984 under the auspices of the North Atlantic Historic Preservation Center. The stone foundation of the house was partially repointed, deteriorated wood framing members were replaced, the roof reshingled, and the wood plank foundation for the fireplace replaced. Replacement of the fireplace foundation and repointing of the house foundation involved ground disturbance, unfortunately Mahlstedt's recommendations were not heeded. A 6 X 9 X 3-foot pit was dug by the restoration crew so the rotted fireplace foundation beams could be slid out and new beams slid into place.
