Determination of Accuracies in Earthwork Quantities from Photogrammetrically Made Surveys
Earthwork cut volumes based on photogrammetric and field cross sections are compared for various types of topography. Photogrammetrically determined earthwork volumes using an Autotrol and Kelsh Plotter agree with those obtained from carefully taken ground cross sections within one percent. This occurred where the topography was rolling to rough. In flat topography the differences were up to 11 percent. A statistical analysis was performed on cross section elevations taken by field and photogrammetric methods. It was found that the horizontal placement of cross section points affected the volumes computed to a greater extent than elevation placement. Cross section data obtained photogrammetrically is sufficiently accurate for highway design and for pay quantities. (BPR abstract)
