Aggregate tests on samples extracted from asphalt mixes are sometimes performed in connection with disputes, and it is then taken for granted that the aggregates are not influenced by the mixing process. During autumn 1986 three field tests during asphalt mix were performed with the purpose of examining whether aggregate properties such as particle shape, impact strength and wear resistance change during asphalt mix production. Samples were taken both from the stockpile and ready asphalt mix from the plant. The test results show that the aggregate properties can change in a complex and unpredictable way during production of asphalt mix and this is especially valid for the abrasion properties. Aggregates extracted from the asphalt mix should therefore not be compared to stockpile.
