A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
NC 54, from Durham-Orange County Line to Research Triangle Park, Project 8.1409701, Federal Aid Project F-42-1(1), Durham County, North Carolina
The North Carolina Division of Highways plans construction of a new four-lane freeway on relocation to replace an outdated segment of NC 54 from the Durham-Orange County Line to existing I-40 in the Research Triangle Park. The length of this project is 7.9 miles and is estimated to cost $17,500,000. This project will complete a long sought goal of providing adequate transportation service between the educational and research facilities of Duke University at Durham, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University at Raleigh with the Research Triangle Park, a research center of nationwide significance. The major environmental impacts of the project will be the relocation of 27 families, slight siltation of streams during construction and the loss of wildlife habitat resulting from the clearing of woodlands for highway right of way. The major beneficial impacts of the project are associated with improved traffic operation including safer and more efficient operating conditions and improved access between the areas of Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh and the Research Triangle Park.
