Developments in the Analysis of Static and Cyclic Lateral Loading of Piles
The first part of the paper reviews the various methods available for the analysis of a single pile subjected to static lateral loading. These theories are compared and shown to give similar results for linear soil masses. Some results for the time-dependent movements of a pile due to consolidation are also reproduced. The extension of the analyses to account for non-linear soil behavior is then discussed and it is demonstrated that non-linear behavior is a dominant feature of lateral pile response. The second part of the paper considers the problem of cyclic lateral loading. Two phenomena are described; cyclic shakedown failure of the pile which may result from the development of residual stresses in the pile due to reversed cyclic loading in a non-linear soil mass, and soil degradation, which involves decreases in soil strength and stiffness due to the cyclic loading.
