Behavior of Piles Subject to Cyclic Lateral Loading
This chapter discusses the response of piles subjected to cyclic lateral loading. The experiments were usually performed by subjecting the piles to series of identical cycles, characterized by the following parameters: the number of cycles N and the frequency (or period) of the cyclic loading; the mean value of the applied lateral load Hm; the half‐amplitude of the cyclic component Hc. The research works on the behavior of piles under cyclic lateral loading were primarily gathered as part of the feasibility study for the SOLCYP project, then extracted from the literature reviews conducted in several theses at LCPC and then IFSTTAR. The monotonic loading tests are used as a reference and can be used, by direct comparison, to determine the effect of the cycles on the pile head displacement, on the maximum moment and on the P‐y reaction curves.
