Falsework
A comprehensive guide to falsework built from most structural materials and used for supporting most types of permanent structure is presented. The responsibility for falsework is both contractual and common law. Design, detailing, construction and inspection are all governed by the class of falsework chosen. The imposed, environmental and dead loads applied to falsework are best calculated by a tabular method. Permissible stresses, loading and deterioration for concrete, steel, timber, bricks, masonry and blockwork, tubular steel scaffolding and proprietary equipment are discussed. For most temporary and permanent structures, foundation support is governed by soil strength and maximum allowable settlement. Particular design considerations for falsework include overloading, lateral, live and shock loading, deflections and local distortions.
