External Building Materials: Quantities and Degradation
The report presents an investigation of external materials on buildings in the greater Stockholm area. The investigation had two main goals: to make an inventory of the amount of different exterior building materials and to inspect and account for the observed deterioration of the materials. This report mainly presents the results on the materials degradation. The investigation was performed as inspections of statistically sampled buildings. The random sampling of the buildings was, for example, performed in strata with different SO2-concentration. The investigation method, i.e. both the inspection routines and the sampling procedure, is carefully reviewed. Degradation to roofings, facades and windows is estimated for different materials and surface finishes. The degradation for certain materials, distributed in age classes and also in some cases by areas with different environmental pollution level, is accounted for. The results showed increased corrosion in areas with high concentration of pollution. This could be observed for renderings, painted galvanized steel and painted wooden windows.
