Renovation of Highway Bridges in West Virginia
The intent of this research is to investigate the possibility of increasing the capacity of older truss bridges. The system investigated was that of using stayed cables to assist the existing truss. The equations chosen for analyzing the new truss system are known as the equations of consistent deformations. The boundary condition is that the final displacement at each of certain joints is equal to the strain compatability of the cables. The final scheme is a structural system using three cables for each truss with a tower height of 15 feet above the top chord of the truss. Using this system it was shown that every member of the existing truss is presently sufficient for carrying the heavier loading. It was also determined that the cost of construction is reasonable for this type of renovative system. The general scheme which has been presented in this paper could be used for practically any type of truss bridge. (Author)
