First Road Base Experiment with a Laboratory Test Track
The paper describes the test track at the University of Sydney and gives some early test results on a road base material. The machine applied loads through a moving pneumatic tyred wheel to sections of pavement material measuring 3 ft. by 4 ft. and with thicknesses up to 13 in. Wheel loads were applied in one direction only. Apparatus has been built to measure the permanent vertical and horizontal deformations of the test material. For the first experiment four sections of road base 6 in. thick were laid using a 3/16 in. to dust crushed dolerite aggregate with 10 per cent of clay binder added. After 14,600 repetitions of a 500 lb. wheel load, bay 1 had deformed considerably more than the other three bays. Permanent horizontal deformations were measured which were up to 0.5 of the corresponding vertical deformations. (Author Modified Abstract)
