Pile Penetration Tests in Regional Soils Common to North Carolina
A feasibility study was undertaken to determine if it would be possible to estimate lengths of friction piles based on Standard Penetration Resistance Test results. The intent was to generate regression equations for different soil types that would estimate the shaft resistance as a function of soil type on N-values. This method requires a significant number of pile load tests to failure together with the related subsurface information. The results of the study indicates that such a procedure is feasible and tentative equations are presented. The scatter between predicted and measured capacities is fairly large although it is generally less than the scatter obtained between predicted capacities based on the Engineering News Formula and the measured capacities.
