Deformations and Pore Pressures Measured Beneath a 2.4 Mile Embankment on Soft Clay
The objective of this report is to document the performance of a high embankment on clay of medium consistency with only measured data involving no assumptions. The scope encompasses the presentation of soil properties measured beneath 14 locations, movements measured beneath 40 locations and pore pressures measured beneath 21 locations. Comparisons show that index properties vary by a factor of 2, compressibility by a factor of 3 and normalized undrained strength by a factor of 3 in a relatively uniform deposit. Measured movements indicate deformations in both the horizontal and vertical directions with unusual behavior observed at several stations. Measured total heads indicate both lateral and vertical drainage.
