Proposed Wilderness Classification, Badlands National Monument, South Dakota
The National Park Service proposes that 58,924 acres within Badlands National Monument be designated as wilderness and added to the National Wilderness Preservation System. This proposal will benefit the area by placing it under the protection of wilderness designation. Adverse effects include increased management costs, curtailment of certain research projects, possible future rationing of use, preclusion of motorized equipment, and preclusion of mass visitor use developments. Beneficial effects include the provision of a more inviolate outdoor laboratory for scientific study.
