Applications of Embedded Optical Fiber Sensors in Reinforced Concrete Buildings and Structures. The potential use of optical fiber sensors embedded, prior to curing, in reinforced concrete buildings and in structures such as bridges, dams and tanks is discussed with regards to the non-destructive measurement of internal strain, and the evaluation of structural integrity. Novel applications in the areas of structural monitoring, experimental stress analysis and in the management and control of service installations are presented. A discussion of the fundamental issues regarding the practical implementation of this technology is given. (rh)
