Channel Improvement Palouse River, Colfax, Washington; Hydraulic Model Investigation
The project includes protective levees and improved channels for the North and South Forks of the Palouse River in Colfax, Washington. Most of the channel is designed for supercritical flow. Six railroad bridges and 12 street and highway bridges cross the channels within the 3.5-mile-long project. Sharp curves and limited clearances at bridges, culverts, and buildings influenced hydraulic design of the channels. Design discharges on the South Fork are 13,000 cfs above Spring Flat Creek and 14,500 cfs below Spring Flat Creek. Design flow on the North Fork is 16,800 cfs. Reaches to be improved by concrete channel or riprapped banks were reproduced in a 1:40-scale model in which the floor slopes were adjusted to provide computed energy gradients at the respective design discharges. The model investigation was concerned with hydraulic performance of the proposed plan and with the development of required modifications. (Modified author abstract)
