Retooling Africa's Electrical Network With Coal
It was coal that underpinned the industrial revolution, now some think it's Africa's turn. The fossil fuel may be on the retreat in the West, but for some African countries, it is seen as a potential economy driver as they build out power plants. The one-time world's largest consumer of coal the U.S. has seen production decline to such an extent that mining companies have shed more than 17,000 jobs since 2010, according to Coal Age. Africa meanwhile is chronically electricity poor, but sitting on 35 billion tons of recoverable coal, enough to last for more than a century, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Consequently the IEA reckons coal power will double across the continent by 2035. Earlier this year, the Beijing-based NDB made its first major loan of US$180 million to South Africa's power utility Eskom for the funding of transmission lines.
