Geological Exploration Using Integrated Geophysical Methods in Tunnel: A Case
Abstract With the development of society and economic, the tunnel is widely constructed as an important fundamental transport tool. To avoid geo-hazards during the construction, the geological detection methods should be adopted and applied to accurately predict adverse geologies ahead of the tunnel face. Liupanshan tunnel, as a key project of Qingdao–Lanzhou highway project, was safety constructed with the help of multiple geophysical methods. During construction, a geological prospecting scheme was designed with several geophysical methods to recognize and image geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face. Typical methods, including TSP, TEM, and GPR, were combined strategically. Two typical detection cases, which have successfully prospected large adverse geology and small geology respectively, are illustrated to prove the effectiveness and practicability of the geological prospecting scheme. With the geological information provided by integrated geophysical methods, the tunnel project was safety completed on schedule. Moreover, the paper provides reference and guidance for geological exploration of other similar tunnel engineering.
