Summary Geotechnically three major units were distinguished; the upper ironstone with high strength parameters and high permeability, the middle unindurated mudstone with high clay content and the lower loose sandstone with some intercalated and disseminated shales. The mode of stratification and the geotechnical characteristics of this horizontally stratified series favor some unstable conditions. The correlation of the index geotechnical properties of the units with slope morphology confirmed the existence of such instabilities. These were grouped as old and young slope processes; the old ones could not have been observed without the aid of the aerial photo interpretation.
