Aggregates for an uncommon use: Cemented fills in mining
Abstract A number of mine exploitation methods resort, mostly for static reasons, to filling with a material that is composed of a sort of concrete. A more and more widespread trend is to use very fine rock particles obtained as waste product from the mineral processing operation as aggregate for the cemented fill. Based upon a plentiful collection of data from mining operations, the paper first sheds light on the technical and economical problems involved in providing, mixing and setting the cemented fill material in place, and critically compares the technical solutions adopted. The laboratory andin situ, tests, to which it is possible to resort in order to ascertain the fitness of the aggregate material and the success of the cemented fill operation, are then reviewed. Lastly, a standard procedure is proposed for technical qualification of the aggregates to be used in the various kinds of cemented fill, based on the discussion of the data collected.
