Teaching materials to civil engineers: Risk and safety, experiments and regulations
Abstract Construction materials are interesting only because they can, once at work in structures and within a given environment, fulfill a given set of functions. The designer must ensure their ability and minimize the risks of dysfunctioning. A teaching of construction materials based on the notion of risk makes possible the passing on of basic knowledge within the more general framework of civil engineering. Examples are given which show how this idea can be a guideline for a whole course of lectures. This paper does not claim to be a model. It only shows how an original approach can be undertaken in a sometimes austere subject. It also gives some practical information on how specific topics are treated with students. Examples are drawn from lectures given to undergraduate and postgraduate students in civil engineering, mechanics and applied geosciences.
