Weathering classification in the characterisation of rock for engineering purposes in British practice
Summary Weathering concepts in pedologya are discussed and found inadequate for engineering geology. Weathering classifications, in engineering geological terms, that have influenced the development of ideas on the characterisation of weathered rock in the United Kingdom are reviewed. A preferred system, involving characterisation of both weathering stages and weathering grades, is presented, and an example of its application in engineering geological research is given.
