Soil characterization of mapping units for highway purposes in a tropical area
Summary The importance and the problem of producing adequate engineering geological or geotechnical maps is specifically discussed where thick layers of lateritic and saprolitic soils occur, for highway purposes in general and particularly, for low cost roads and related engineering works. As far as mapping purposes are concerned, the limitations of the use of soil characterization based on gradation, Atterberg limits and HRB-AASHO (or USCS) classification supplemented by the conventional CBR test are emphasized. In order to deal with these limitations we present a procedure which uses basically a very simple apparatus and small size samples (40 to 50 mm diameter) which provide the most necessary data for highway purposes, mainly for low cost pavement design and for forecasting soil cut slope erodibility.
