Community engagement with the state: a case study of the Plymouth Hoe Citizens Jury
In this paper I search for a synergy between lessons I learnt through involvement with the first citizens jury in Plymouth, England and community work praxis. Citizens juries are one of a raft of mechanisms, recommended by the current government in Britain, to help local authorities work in partnership with the communities within their area of governance, both to extend and improve their democratic validity and revitalize local active citizenship. This philosophy stretches the boundaries of representative democracy, into a more deliberative democracy, wherein those participating learn more about the value of, and reasons for, active participation through their active citizenship.
