Experimental study of measuring strain by fiber optic sensor used in civil engineering structures
An intrinsic fiber-optic strain sensor for the health monitoring in civil engineering is described. The results of the application of the sensor to the steel tension and concrete compression which were compared with strain gauge showed good linearity, and can be used to reflect correctly the magnitude of the loads upon the steel or the concrete structure. The size of this kind of the sensor is small. The technique of fixing the sensor is briefly discussed. The sensor is convenient for the application because the sensor protected by glue can be easily attached to the surface of the specimen and no other special method is desired.
