Polymer surface characterization by XPS and SIMS
Abstract Despite the vast range of available polymers and the corresponding possibilities for property selection it is a fact that in many applications the surface properties of polymeric structures undermine the benefits derived from bulk properties. Inadequate adhesion is a notable example; consequently, surface pretreatment procedures have been developed to modify surface behaviour. In this example, as in other examples of polymer surface behaviour, the region of structure-property determination generally extends only a few molecular layers (≤ 10 nm) from the surface into the solid.
