Far-Infrared Properties of Intermediate Valence- and Heavy Fermion Materials
Abstract The knowledge of the electronic structure of intermediate valence — and heavy fermion materials is of fundamental importance to understand the thermodynamic behavior, the electrical resistivity or the magnetic properties. The quoted physical entities are heavily dependent on the electronic structure within meV around the Fermi energy EF, especially when the electronic density of states is a strongly varying function of the energy near EF. It will be a long time before band structure calculations will give us an energy resolution of the order of meV1 so experimental methods will be the only handle to obtain information. However, there is no simple answer as to what the various experimental methods measure.
