Finite Element Analysis of Flexible Pavement with Non-linear Material Behaviour
Pavements have become an integral part of infrastructural growth, and the length of road network has been increased immensely from last a few decades. However, the continuous distresses of pavements under heavy traffic loads and other reasons has boosted the pavement research before its application. In the present study, finite element method is applied in the analysis of flexible pavement using nonlinear material behavior. As pavement consists of several layers, different materials need to be used in different layers, and these materials show different characteristics. Due to the lack of research related to the nonlinear material, this study aims to study the effect of different material characteristics in the flexible pavement through finite element modelling. A four-layer pavement is prepared with bituminous surface layer, base layer, granular subbase layer and compacted subgrade layer. Based on the properties of each layer, four different models are prepared such as linear elastic model, visco-plastic model, elasto-plactic model and Drucker-Prager model. The stress-strain relationships are obtained from different analysis, and the results indicate that the nonlinear material behaviour well predicts the deformation of pavements.
