Effect of Arch Dimensions and Overall Fill Depth on Deflection of Three-Hinge Buried Precast Arch Bridge
Arch bridges are classic architectural structures that have been seen throughout the history. This type of structures has an exceptional overall strength to support applied loads. The three-hinge buried precast arch bridge, TechSpan® as a buried structure consists of segmental precast units forming a three- hinged arch structure. When the three-hinge arch has a relatively large span with flat top or when it supports a heavy load, the crown of the arch tends to deflect (sag). If not considered in the design properly which is undesirable, this deflection hardly recovers at the end of construction because of concrete cracking. To prevent or at least minimize the deflection, the original shape can be modified by pre-cambering. This paper demonstrates the effect of span length, arch segment thickness, and the depth of overfill on the deflection at the crown by doing sensitivity analysis using finite element modelling.
