A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The analysis of culverts requires consideration of the location of the effective control, the significance of “minor” energy losses and the effect of inlet submergence. Control is considered to occur at the inlet or the outlet, with outlet control including the both the barrel and the downstream flow depth. Inlet control may occur with different combinations of inlet and outlet submergence. The relationship between the headwater depth and discharge is quantified for unsubmerged and submerged inlets, and for different box and circular inlet geometries. Outlet control may also occur with the inlet and outlet being submerged or unsubmerged. The analysis procedure is outlined, with application to pipe and box sections.
