Genetic Algorithms in Automated Structural Synthesis
Abstract The present paper describes an implementation of genetic search methods in the optimum synthesis of structural systems. These methods represent an adaptation of principles of natural selection and evolution to conduct a randomized search in the most promising regions of the design space. The approach requires only an evaluation of the objective function and constraints. Furthermore, the search proceeds by updating an entire population of designs, an attribute that makes the method less susceptible to convergence to a local optimum. The focus of the paper resides in examining the numerical characteristics of genetic algorithms. An adaptation of the approach in simultaneous analysis and design is also presented. The approach is combined with finite element analysis for the design of truss and frame structures.
