Soil Interpretation—Standard Penetration Test Versus Electric Cone Penetration Test
Geological processes often result into spatial variability in the subsoil that significantly influences the stability and costs of civil engineering projects. Geotechnical design cannot be done or optimize unless the designer has considered the sensibly accurate subsoil stratigraphy and engineering soil properties. Geotechnical soil investigation represents the methods of determining subsoil characteristic using several in-situ and laboratory tests. There are numerous methods of geotechnical site investigation, but Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and electric Cone Penetrometer Test (eCPT) are the most common. Both are in-situ tests and have their own advantages and limitations. The present paper discusses the simple interpretation of SPTs and eCPT data and its implication in geotechnical design basis.
