Summary Two procedures have been presented for determing deflections and relaxation of prestressed concrete beams which can be used also for the calculation of the redistribution of stresses in the sections. The procedures are based on the hypotheses of the theory of linear creep. After establishing the general relations of the stresses and the deformations, the hypotheses of the theory of aging, corrected by the Recommendations of the European Concrete Committee have been used. With a view to simplification the calculation procedure based on the algebraic relations of stresses and deformations has also been developed. A great number of prestressed concrete beams were tested in determining the deflections and the relaxation. The series of beams tested and analyzed had prestress reinforcement percentages of ω k =0.31, 0.63 and 1.23%. At the same time the shrinkage and the creep of the non-reinforced concrete were determined, as the basis of the analysis of the performance of the tested beams. The theoretical analysis was made by two procedures which have a good concordance with the tests, which leads to the conclusion that the relations proposed can faithfully describe the performance of the prestressed concrete beams under the effect of long-term stresses.
