Stimulated-Desorption of Hydrogen from Water on Transition Metal Surfaces
Abstract There continues to be a strong interest in both the applications and fundamental research relating to stimulated-desorption of ionic, atomic, and molecular species from solid surfaces. New areas of research in this field are becoming increasingly diverse and complex[1]. This paper summarizes recent work relating to the study of the stimulated-desorption of protons arising from electron bombardment of water adsorbed on transition metal surfaces. This work includes both theoretical and experimental results relating to several diverse aspects of proton desorption; a) the evolution of ionic character during desorption, b) comparison of ion kinetic energy distributions with those associated with metastable neutral hydrogen, c) the correlation between angular distributions of ions and their kinetic energies, and d) observations of fine-structure in ESDIAD.
