Finite Element Evaluation of New Retrofit Schemes for Pre-Northridge Connections
In the decade following the Northridge earthquake, some retrofit designs were developed to address the problems observed in pre-Northridge welded connections. These retrofit designs involved substantial field welding, making them expensive to implement and infeasible in many cases. Most pre-Northridge steel moment frames have not been retrofitted, but there is currently renewed interest due to adaptive reuse projects and retrofit initiatives. In this study, finite element models were used to investigate new retrofit schemes that may be more economical than existing options. The new retrofit schemes consist of improved beam web attachment, introducing a fuse plate at the bottom flange level, or a combination of the two. Finite element models were used to compare the stress state and inelastic demands at the beam-to-column welds before and after the retrofit schemes were implemented. The finite element models indicated that a fuse plate would be effective in reducing weld demands, such that the existing welds may not need not be back-gouged and replaced.
