Mixed Valence Properties of Oxide Ions in Metal Oxides
Abstract One of the basic criteria for metallicity is the coexistence of neutral and ionic states. It has to be asked whether in oxides of metals which exhibit itinerant electron behaviour such mixed valence is exhibited by both the cation and anions. Mixed valence in oxides may involve O- or the more stable O2- 2 peroxide species which may be formed according to the equations: 1a $$\text{B}^{\text{n}+} + \text{O}^{2-}\, \rightleftarrows\, \text{B}^{(n-1)+} + \text{O}^- (\text{or}\, 1/2\, \text{O}^{2-})\,..$$ 1b $$\text{B}^{\text{n}+} + 2\text{O}^{2-}\, \rightleftarrows\, \text{B}^{(n-2)+} + \text{O}^{2-}_2\ldots$$
