A Maturity Assessment Framework for Applying BIM in Consultant Companies
Abstract Building information modeling (BIM), one of the most interesting advances in the construction industry, has different benefits for consultant companies. It will cause some challenges if the company is not ready for implementing. This paper intends to develop a framework for assessing the maturity and preparedness of consultant companies for implementing BIM. The framework has three main steps including finding barriers, weighting barriers and maturity assessment. Barriers were identified by literature surveying. To discover the priority and validation of the barriers, a questionnaire was developed and distributed among 104 consultant companies in Iran. The questionnaires were analyzed by some statistical tests. Results showed that the ability of education and the cost of rework are the two most important challenges in Iranian consultant companies. By applying ELECTRE I method and the results of questionnaire analysis, the framework would be able to answer this question, “Is this company ready enough to run BIM?” Finally, a real case study was reviewed and four companies were assessed by the proposed framework.
