Evaluation of the Mechanical Behavior of Asphalt Mixes with Sustainable Fillers
Aiming to reduce environmental impacts generated by waste, there is a growing need to assess the utilization of such materials within the paving industry, demanding comprehensive studies into their implications. This paper aims to evaluate the mechanical behavior of asphalt mixes produced with sustainable fillers, comparing them to traditional ones. For this purpose, Baosteel’s slag short flow (BSSF) slag and fly ash were used, in addition to hydrated lime as a traditional filler. Two additional asphalt mixes typically used in the state of Ceará, Brazil, were evaluated: with amine-based antistripping additive and only mineral aggregates. The results reveal that mixes containing sustainable fillers or the adhesion agent exhibit reduced tensile strengths compared to the reference mix. Moreover, the resilient modulus increased for the mixes featuring the amine-based additive and hydrated lime, while remained constant with the use of the BSSF, and decreased with the incorporation of the fly ash incorporation.
