Design of a Self-lifting Pedestrian Bridge for Flood-Prone Locations
Global temperature has shown instantaneous and vigorous rise since past decade with temperature rise by about 1.71°F. Its effects have also been disastrous. Climatic change and higher floods have been visible since few years. Kerala also got affected by massive flood since last two years. This has led to destroy of about 16,000 km PWD road, 82,000 km local road and 134 bridges. This project includes a live project for Kottayam Municipality, i.e. a design of steel pedestrian bridge that has to be constructed against tributary coming from Meenachil River. Previously, a pedestrian bridge existed at this location which was washed away by the 2018 Kerala floods. An innovative approach to enable the bridge of lifting itself when the water level rises beyond certain limits is proposed. The design of the bridge is done using STAAD pro. software, and the hydraulic lifting is explained numerically.
