An Improved Beam-Spring Model for Excavation Support
Abstract The servo struts are widely used in recent years to control deformations of retaining walls. However, the steel support servo system lacks theoretical guidance for the control thresholds of axial forces. This paper proposes an improved beam-spring method for modeling servo system. The revised method uses a combined model of prestress and springs to simulate servo struts. Considering the couple relationship between earth pressure and wall deformation, the non-limit earth pressure is used as applied load and the equilibrium equation can be solved by iteration method. Moreover, the comparison is carried out to analyze bending moment and deformations of retaining walls with or without servo struts. Results indicate that servo struts can effectively control wall deformations, while bending moment of walls on unexcavated sides increases significantly, which may cause structure failure during construction.
