Abstract Although the formation of a heavy-electron state in metals at low temperatures is by itself a fascinating and largely unsolved problem, it is mainly the phase transitions out of such a state which have led to the wide-spread interest among experimentalists and theorists for this class of materials. No doubt it is the observation of superconductivity involving heavy quasiparticles that is most spectacular because various properties that will be discussed below indicate the possibility of unconventional superconductivity triggered by alternative mechanisms and hence leading to electron pairing with different symmetry than that in ordinary metals.
