Abstract This paper describes the effect of the characteristics of mooring systems and external forces to motions of moored ships in accordance with model experiment and computations. Here, the differences of ship motions in waves with and without the action from wind will be presented relating to two different load deflection characteristics of mooring systems. Furthermore, it will be indicated that ship motions are important for ports located at places where long period waves sometimes come into the basin, and an example is presented where the port operating rate was increased by improving mooring system.
