A collaborative negotiation methodology for large scale civil engineering and architectural projects
Abstract Large-scale engineering and architectural projects are unique endeavors that require a high level of human creativity from multiple professional disciplines. In such an environment, successful collaboration is critical. Because the different participants are from different technical backgrounds, and typically come from different organizations, competitive stresses exist within project relationships. Better methodologies are needed to relieve these stresses that exist in this environment. The research presented in this paper outlines a collaborative negotiation model and methodology that successfully takes into consideration the following four issues faced during large scale civil engineering and architectural projects: (1) a collaborative-competitive environment; (2) domain-dependent information; (3) strategy-influenced outcomes; and (4) the geographical and time distribution of the negotiating individuals. The methodology explored in this paper utilizes the quantitative nature of game theory and the qualitative nature of various conflict resolution theories, and better defines the interactions of collaborating professionals to use the strengths of humans and computers alike. This research also sought to complement the development of new communication technologies with the development of a collaborative negotiation methodology that best allows professionals to take advantage of those technologies by defining the protocols of interaction during the negotiations presented in largescale engineering systems.
