UHPC in Existing Structures
UHPC as a cement composite material with exceptional mechanical properties and also with extraordinary durability can be efficiently used also for strengthening of structures, not only those made of concrete. The paper summarizes some experience preferably with strengthening of buildings and bridges. After specifying the basic principles, the bond is mentioned as an important issue for adequate function of the strengthening. Strengthening of floors in buildings and strengthening of bridge decks are the main topics of the paper. The role of UHPC in buildings and in bridges is not identical, the approach for buildings and for bridges are different in terms of the design of the composition of UHPC and also the pouring technology. The following chapters discuss the strengthening of vertical elements, technical guidelines published in Czechia and finally an example of application of UHPC on an important road bridge.
