Nanoengineering UHPC materials and structures
In this contribution, some elements of nanoengineering of UHPC materials and structures are presented. At the nanoscale, it is shown that UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) is a nanogranular material, whose superior macroscopic properties derive from an ultra-high dense packing of nano-sized CaO-SiO2-H2O particles. This ultra-high dense packing is achieved by means of a refined mix-design involving the water-to-cement ratio, the silica-fume content and heat-treatment. Based on this fundamental knowledge, it is possible to translate progress in nanoscience and nanoengineering into day-to-day UHPC engineering applications. This is illustrated for the prototype development of highway bridge girders, which is currently under consideration in the United States for the next generation of high performance sustainable infrastructure.
