Macro- and Microtribology of Information Storage and Retrieval Devices
Abstract Information storage and retrieval devices include tape, flexible disk and rigid disk drives used for audio, video and data processing applications. These devices are based on magnetic and optical recording principles, the dominant being magnetic recording. The magnetic recording process involves relative motion between a magnetic medium (tape or disk) against a stationary or rotating (audio, video and data processing) read/write magnetic head. As an example of a magnetic storage device, schematic of a rigid disk drive is shown in Figure 1. In a rigid disk drive, a stack of disks is mounted on a sealed, grease lubricated ball bearing spindle. The disk stack is rotated by a DC motor at speeds ranging from a few thousand to a maximum speed to about 15,000 RPM. A head slider is supplied for each disk surface. The slider-suspension assembly is actuated by a stepping motor or a voice-coil motor for read-write operation (Bhushan, 1996a, 2000). For construction and materials used in magnetic head and medium components, refer to Bhushan (1996a, 1999a, 2000).
